The Butterflies of Hong Kong
(A Volume in the AP Natural World Series)

by Mike Bascomb
Book Description
Hong Kong has a marvelously rich and diverse butterfly fauna, all contained within a relatively small area which can be seen and enjoyed within a few days outing from the central city area. An important part of the southern Chinese region, it is home to a significant proportion of the butterfly species of that part of the world. Two-hundred nineteen butterfly species in five families and 17 subfamilies have been recorded and all are described in this encyclopedic reference. A complete and up-to-date handbook on the identification, systematics, biology and ecology of the butterflies found in Hong Kong, this authoritative book includes keys, full color plates and line drawings identifying males and females, as well as eggs and papae. Throughout the book the emphasis is on the study of live animals, rather than collecting for its own sake. The authors are strong advocates for developing our understanding of butterflies in the field and the growth of our knowledge of their biology, ecology, and conservation.

Key Features:
* Complete and up-to-date handbook of Hong Kong's 219 butterfly species
* Covers identification, systematics, biology and ecology
* Includes color plates and line drawings identifying males and females, as well as eggs and papae

About the Author
Mike Bascombe and his wife Frieda moved to Hong Kong over 25 years ago. Living and working in the central urban area, they fled to rural areas whenever possible for spare-time butterfly and bird watching. They soon moved to settle in the New Territories where Mike's enthusiasm and knowledge of the butterflies grew, and where their two children were born. Their years spent collecting, rearing and photographing, and the lack of a readily available systematic source of information, were the impetus for this book. Previous entomological works include Annotated Checklist of Hong Kong Butterflies (M.J. Bascombe, co-author) and Check List of the Butterflies of South China (M.J. Bascombe).

Born in South Africa, Gweneth Johnston had an interest in natural history from an early age, particularly for insect life and plants. Her husband's posting provided opportunities to study butterflies in South East Asia, notably Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, with visits to other rewarding places in the region. A move to Hong Kong in 1972 enabled her to concentrate on the butterflies of the territory over the next 12 years. She was a co-author with Drs. D.S. Hill and M.J. Bascombe of an Annotated Checklist of Hong Kong Butterflies published in January 1978. She produced an authoritative work with her husband on Butterflies in the Government's This is Hong Kong series published in May 1980.
